Newbie Internet Marketers: Don't Overlook the Basics

By B.g. Sloan

B. G. Sloan here. Okay, I did it the drawn out, hard, aggravating and costly method. I really didn't waste thousands of dollars as some internet marketing newbies do, but I did my share. Maybe you can do it much better and wiser. I have just recently arrived at where I look forward to checking my accounts for affiliate sales every day and to see what my web pages have made. And no, I'm not getting rich....yet! I haven't been doing it nearly a long enough time for the huge dollars. But I've been working at it just long enough to start producing some fun extra cash on the side and can really see the potential for tons more now that I have begun to learn. So, I've gotten started, but in one respect, I'm still taking baby steps.

But, if you have an interest in making money online, I want to take you back to some simple stages where I stumbled and actually made no money for quite a long period of time. Maybe a little something I may say here can help you in internet marketing. Here some things to think about.

1. You can be successful online, but it probably will not happen by be next Wednesday. I have never found an easy money, push button, roll the dollars in extremely quickly method. Some folks claim it's out there somewhere, but I have never located it. Don't get me wrong, once you get some sites ranked and they become good product sites, at that point those websites can make you some fairly easy income with little effort. It just takes a lot of work to get your business to that point.

2. Research and find a couple of good teachers. Oh my goodness.. there is no shortage of internet marketing experts available. And unless you have a really awesome friend, most people won't teach you for free. And, my honest opinion is that you need to locate people who have prospered by promoting and marketing goods that are outside the internet marketing niche. There are too many people attempting to sell the next get rich quick marketing strategy that you should probably avoid. However, there ARE some great instructors on the market. You just have to do your due diligence and research to find a good one. I went through way too much junk, and I mean junk, just before I identified a team of guys (who for a reasonable fee) helped me get rolling.

3. Focus. In the exhilaration of a new exciting adventure I bought so many junky products that I didn't even have time to concentrate on whether the material would even work. I would see the next amazing marketing method to come around and jump into it before I really gave several of the other products a chance. But, bottom line, focus on one or two strategies, gurus (after you've researched them well), and stick with that technique for a while to seek if it is a successful srategy. You generally will learn something, even if you don't initially find what you need to start with.

4. Get instruction on the fundamentals. I see online marketing gurus try to teach beginners stuff that they really don't even need to know yet. They are teaching a newbie some ideas and techniques that won't come into play for quite some time, and if you start working on some of that stuff, you're losing time that you should be giving to the fundamentals to establish a good solid internet business. Have you learned to construct a basic, straightforward website? It's not that difficult. Do you grasp what affiliate marketing is, or Adsense, or even an ecommerce website? Do you know how to do keyword analysis and the basics of getting ranked in Google? I understood some basics of keyword research, but my lack of sufficient knowledge about that definitely slowed me down. Do you recognize how to pick out a particular niche that you can look into and possibly find a place in there where you can compete with the present competition and have a likelihood to make some cash? How about social networks and how those things come into play. Or, can you compose articles, or do you have enough money to use outsourcing for some of the writing that will probably be required. Or will you use the pay per click type of advertising.

Those seem like basic things, but when I started I was just obtaining bits and pieces from all kinds of different online marketers just wanting to make their income on the newest internet marketing product or service of the day, and typically the product of the day is very specific to one topic and it takes a long time pinging around from marketer to marketer to learn a full enough range of necessary fundamentals to put together a strategy.

5. Learn something from every product line or venture. Unfortunately, you will most likely buy products that eventually teach you what doesn't work. However, as I stated earlier, there are some good marketers and teachers available who know that they won't keep customers for long if they are not teaching them well and providing them value. The primary part-time cash that I'm really thrilled about making right now came from one idea from one single online video of a very notable internet marketer. I happen to believe that some of the things that this particular marketer teaches are not that effective, but much of it is exceptionally good, and I got going one really great idea from him and ran with it. And when you start pulling some website traffic to your site and making a little cash, your plans start meshing. Who knows if I will ever do anything like this as full time employment? But even if I don't, I enjoy making some part time income in a little something I actually enjoy. If you are a newbie or a potential newbie online marketer I hope that some of my ramblings have helped you!
